Biological activity of Bacillus thuringiensis strains against larvae of the Blowfly Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Neotropical Entomology
Oliveira,Marcio S.; Nascimento,Marcelo A.; Cavados,Clara F.G.; Chaves,Jeane Q.; Rabinovitch,Leon; Lima,Marli M.; Queiroz,Margareth M.C..
Different strains of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner were proved to be a powerful biologic insecticide against larvae of several insect orders. Due to the epidemiological importance of blowflies of the Chrysomya Robineau-Desvoidy genus in the production of secondary cutaneous myiasis and mechanic transmission of pathogenic agents, the performance of two strains of B. thuringiensis (LFB-FIOCRUZ 907 and LFB-FIOCRUZ 856) was tested against larvae of Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann). The LFB-FIOCRUZ 907 strain was tested in four different concentrations, added to the diet; the LFB-FIOCRUZ 856 strain was tested in three concentrations. C. putoria larvae showed sensibility to the treatment with the LFB-FIOCRUZ 907 strain at the tested concentrations. The higher...

Biological control of fire blight in pear orchards with a formulation of Pantoea agglomerans strain Eh 24 BJM
Özaktan,Hatice; Bora,Tayyar.
Biological control by using epiphytic bacteria against Erwinia amylovora has been considered as an alternative method for controlling the disease. Talc-based formulation of Pantoea agglomerans strain Eh-24 was applied at 30% and 100% bloom on two pear orchards which were selected from different locations in the Aegean Region in Turkey. Pear orchard trials were replicated for two years (1999 and 2000) in each place. Talc-based formulation of P. agglomerans strain Eh-24 was sprayed on pear trees which were naturally infected with E. amylovora. In the orchard trials conducted in 1999 and 2000, talc-based formulation of P. agglomerans strain Eh-24 reduced the percentage of blighted blossoms on pear orchards by 63% to 76%, approximately. Copper...

Biological control of invasive plant species: stochastic economic analysis AgEcon
Chalak-Haghighi, Morteza; Ruijs, Arjan; van Ierland, Ekko C..
We analysed to what extent the stochastic effects of two biological control agents (i.e. weevils and mycoherbicides) affect the optimal choice of Californian thistle control. A stochastic, dynamic optimisation model was set up to analyse strategies that maximise the expected net present values. We analysed the cost-effective strategies to control the thistle for deterministic and stochastic cases. Results show that the stochasticity of the efficacy of weevils does not affect the optimal strategy. Compared to the deterministic case, however, mycoherbicides will be introduced at a higher level of weed density if we take the stochastic effect of mycoherbicides into account.

Bacillus species can form endospores and have broad-spectrum activity of their antibiotics. For that reason, they offer several advantages over other bacteria for protection against root pathogens. This work was intended to determine the ability of Bacillus spp. to inhibit Verticillium dahliae. First, antagonistic activities of Bacillus spp. were studied in greenhouse trials. These results suggest that the bacterium can control soil-borne diseases. Secondly, to investigate the situation in a culture environment, Bacillus spp. were examined for their activity to control Verticillium black spot of Japanese radish and plant-growth promotion rhizobacteria (PGPR) effects in a field. After 2 months, these bacteria reduced Verticillium black spot of Japanese...

Biological insect control using Metarhizium anisopliae: morphological, molecular, and ecological aspects Ciência Rural
Tiago,Patricia Vieira; Oliveira,Neiva Tinti de; Lima,Elza Áurea de Luna Alves.
Microbial control of insects is based on the rational use of pathogens to maintain environmentally balanced pest population levels, and Metarhizium anisopliae has been the most studied and most utilized fungal species for that purpose. The natural genetic variability of entomopathogenic fungi is considered one of the principal advantages of microbial insect control. The inter- and intraspecific variability and the genetic diversity and population structures of Metarhizium and other entomopathogenic fungi have been examined using ITS-RFLP, ISSR, and ISSP molecular markers. The persistence of M. anisopliae in the soil and its possible effects on the structures of resident microbial communities must be considered when selecting isolates for biological insect...

Biological Management of Basal Rot of Onion by Trichoderma harzianum and Withania somnifera Planta Daninha
AKHTAR,R.; JAVAID,A..
ABSTRACT: Onion is attacked by destructive soil-borne fungal plant pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae, resulting in basal rot disease. In the present study, three Trichoderma species (T. pseudokoningii, T. harzianum and T. reesei) and leaves of solanaceous weed Withania somnifera were used for management of this disease. The in vitro interaction study revealed T. harzianum as the most effective biocontrol agent against the pathogen. In a pot trial, dried leaf material of W. somnifera (1%, 2% and 3% w/w) and inoculum of T. harzianum were mixed in the pot soil previously inoculated with the pathogen. The highest incidence of the disease (87%) was found in positive control (pathogen inoculation without any amendment). Different rates of dry leaf...

Biological, nutritional, and histochemical basis for improving an artificial diet for Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Neotropical Entomology
Magro,Sandra R.; Dias,Alcides B.; Terra,Walter R.; Parra,José R.P..
The biology of Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) reared on fifth instars of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) (natural diet) and in vitro (artificial diet) was evaluated. Data on the number of instars, development time and food intake were collected, and histochemical tests were conducted to detect proteins and lipids in the parasitoid's digestive tract. The data disclosed differences that can help to improve artificial rearing of B. hebetor. B. hebetor had three instars in both diets, but the developmental time on the artificial diets was prolonged due to the increase in larval and pupal development times. Larvae grew faster on the natural host and required a lower food intake (2.7 µl) as compared to that required by the...
